Children and Gadgets: The Battle for Attention in a Digital Age
One of the biggest challenges we face today is attention—or rather, the lack of it. A few days ago, I came across a post stating that companies are laying off Gen-Z employees due to poor performance, and I couldn’t help but reflect on the role that gadgets play in this.
As parents, we often worry about the amount of time our children spend on their phones. But here’s the truth: much as it is our responsibility to pay school fees, it is the child’s responsibility to pay attention. The question then arises—should we take away their phones to help them focus?
Should We Ban Phones for Kids?
My answer is an emphatic NO!
There are far more benefits to children having access to gadgets than there are disadvantages. Besides, it’s unrealistic to assume that all parents will agree to ban them. If you take your child’s phone away, they will still be surrounded by other children who have one.
Instead of constantly worrying, let’s adopt a more strategic approach. Here’s what we can do:
1. Stop Worrying
Worrying does more harm than good. When children notice how much their phone usage concerns you, they may become even more attached to it—just to keep your attention on them. The more you resist, the more they persist.
2. Redirect Their Focus
Gadgets are not just for entertainment. Teach children to see their devices as tools for learning, creativity, and even financial independence. Help them explore digital skills like coding, content creation, or online business opportunities.
3. Assign Time-Bound Tasks
Give your child meaningful, structured activities. Invest in books that teach financial literacy, emotional intelligence, and wealth creation. Have them read and summarize these books. Autobiographies, business insights, and books on the future of work will prepare them for what’s coming.
The Future of Work: A Wake-Up Call
Many of us don’t realize that in the next few years, only a small percentage of people will have stable employment, and even fewer will be employable. The world is changing rapidly, and traditional education alone won’t be enough to secure a successful future.
Instead of fighting against gadgets, let’s harness their power. Let’s raise children who are not just consumers of digital content but creators and innovators in the digital age.
